The sun had just risen. Air temperatures were cool, and a light breeze was blowing. At first blush, you may think this would be a morning to borough under the covers and sleep in. However, if you’re a runner, you may think it to be the perfect morning to tackle a 5k, 10k, or even a quick 1 mile fun run.
That’s exactly what took place on Saturday, March 29th, the morning of the First Annual Honduran Street Party Run to benefit Just Because We Care. Nearly 350 runners and walkers gathered at Streets of St. Charles to take part in the festivities, which included the races, live music, games with the St. Louis Rams, and great food and drink. Runners from across the country – and around the globe – joined the race. The winner of the 5K came from Australia, and we drew participants from Texas, Florida, Kansas, and Minnesota, among others.
Mandy Murphey from Fox 2 News, who traveled to the mountain in January, told the story of her journey and officially sounded the horn to signal the start of the race. St. Charles County Councilman Mike Elam served as MC and kept the crowds entertained.
Great swag! Each runner received a long-sleeved race shirt, a Honduran style cowboy hat, and a race medal. We also featured a “Beat The Pinata” competition where runners were racing to beat the times of special runners dressed in piñata costumes. Everyone had their eyes on those piñatas! Everyone who beat the piñata time was entered into a drawing for special prizes. And finally, the top three winners in each age bracket won a trophy. We had some very competitive races and super fast runners!
Great venue! Streets of St. Charles, home to Wamhoff, features the areas greatest new restaurants. Runners and spectators got to experience food and drink from Prasino, Bar Louie and Tucano’s, saw the great new Residences building, which is an upscale apartment community, and got a sneak peek at what’s to come – which includes a new luxury AMC Theater this fall!
Great Street Party! We created a great street party atmosphere, in true Honduran style! Jewelry, clothing, food, massages, and a variety of services were featured at the Street Party Run. If that wasn’t enough, live music by Brookroyal, Rams cheerleaders, Ambush Soccer Players, and a huge inflatable with games from the St. Louis Rams, and prizes including signed player memorabilia.
Best of all, we were able to raise over $12,000 to help feed and care for the children on the mountain!
I was blessed to have an amazing committee working to make the Street Party Run a great success, and am extremely grateful for their support, and the generosity of all of our sponsors.
A great time was had by all – runners, walkers, and spectators alike! So if you missed it this year, be sure to make it a date for next year! Talks are already underway for the 2015 Honduran Street Party Run.
